Description and itinerary of the Tour
You will enjoy the best tour of Besalú, one of the most beautiful medieval villages of the peninsula, and you will do it with an official guide of the city, the only and best way to visit some of the buildings inside.
On this tour we will discover the secrets of the Jewish community and the Miqveh, one of the oldest Jewish baths in the world. History, secrets and legends await you in Besalú. If you come on Tuesday, you can buy fresh local products at the weekly market.
We start the tour crossing the beautiful 12th century bridge while we have an incredible panoramic view of Besalú and travel back in time with one of its most important counts of the 10th century: Bernat Tallaferro.
On the other side of the bridge, the narrow streets, medieval squares and old stone houses take us back to other times when the town was one of the most important in Catalonia. We will enter the Jewish quarter, the square of the old synagogue, its narrow streets, and the Miqvé (separate entrance).
We will learn from one of the best experts on the subject the process of purification and Jewish customs and festivals. A Jewish legacy that few know about awaits us.
From the synagogue square we will have a unique panoramic view of the Romanesque bridge. We continue to the old church of the monastery of Sant Pere, consecrated more than 1000 years ago, the Romanesque pilgrims’ hospital Sant Julià and the mezuzah, which is preserved in one of the medieval buildings. We finish the tour with a shot of our typical liqueur made from green walnuts and aromatic herbs: the ratafia.
